The deadline to enter projects for the 23rd Salão Design Award is September 5. Competitors include Brazilian and foreigner undergraduate students or students taking technical courses related to design and architecture, in addition to professional designers, architects, design and architecture studios or offices, woodwork shops, retail businesses and manufacturing companies. The prize will consist of R$ 10,000 for professionals and R$ 6,000 for students.
The main change in the regulations this year concerns the typology of products that can compete for the award. In this edition, there will be no categories for accessories and lighting, and only furniture projects can be entered. There will be five categories, now called challenges: Spaces in transformation challenge; 2020 Brazilian identity challenge; Panel use challenge; Embedded technology challenge and Positivist experience challenge.
Sponsored by Berneck and Interprint do Brasil, the Salão Design Award has been organized by the Furniture Industry Association of Bento Gonçalves (Sindmóveis) since 1988. The evaluation model of the entries has also been changed. The director of the Salão Design Award, Eduardo Nuncio, explains that there will be 10 judges, divided into two groups. The first five guests will make the technical-functional evaluation of the graphic pieces entered. During the second qualifying phase, five other judges will make the aesthetic-creative evaluation of the finalist products and the choice of the winners.
The evaluation of the entries will take place in September and the products qualified for the second phase will be announced on October 10. The two groups of judges will be:
TECHNICAL-FUNCTIONAL JUDGES
– Ana Brum: technical director at Centro Brasil Design and general coordinator of the DesignBrasil.org.br portal.
– Maria Cecilia Loschiavo dos Santos: full professor of design at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo. She is the author of several books.
– Mateus Conceição: designer with 20 years of experience in the furniture industry, having worked the last 11 years as the Head Designer of Grupo K1.
– Ricardo Dal Piva: technical and technological services analyst at SENAI Institute of Wood and Furniture Technology, providing technical and technological consultancy services in the wood and furniture fields
– Silvana Carminati Heckman: with 20 years of experience as an executive in business management at leading Brazilian design firms, she is the current president of ABD – Brazilian Association of Interior Designers
AESTHETIC-CREATIVE JUDGES
– Adélia Borges: craft and design historian, critic, and curator. She has written more than a dozen books, including Design + Crafts: The Brazilian Path (2011).
– Fernando Mendes: architect, designer and cabinetmaker. He worked for over twenty years with master Sergio Rodrigues.
– Freddy Van Camp: with a designer career of over 50 years, award winner of numerous prizes, juror in several competitions, and author and translator of books on design.
– Heloísa Crocco: artist and designer, she is currently involved in work inspired directly by nature.
– Taissa Buescu: she has written articles to several Italian, Brazilian and British magazines specialized in design, architecture and lifestyle. Editor-in-chief of Casa Vogue since 2010.

The Salão Design Award, organized since 1988 by the Furniture Industry Association of Bento Gonçalves (Sindmóveis), was established in the largest furniture manufacturing center in the country to meet the demands for innovation of the furniture industry at that time. In its 30 years of existence, almost 15,000 projects were entered. The award ceremony and the show of the winner products will be held at Movelsul Brasil, in March 2020, in Bento Gonçalves (RS). After that, the winners will also take part in an exhibition as part of the Design Weekend São Paulo in August.
